Jeffrey was Professor of Sanskrit at the university of Toronto. He then trained as a Freudian analyst and was briefly Director of the Freud Archives. Disagreements over child sexual abuse (he believed it was real) led to his leaving psychoanalysis and he turned to writing about animals.
